Il progetto da quattro miliardi di dollari è stato fortemente voluto dagli Stati Uniti, desiderosi di sfruttare il ricchissimo bacino petrolifero del Caspio. Altri due rapporti delle organizzazioni ambientaliste criticano l’insicurezza della pipeline verificata anche da un’indagine del parlamento inglese. Tra i finanziatori dell’oleodotto oltre a Banca Intesa, che sotto le pressioni ha deciso di ritirarsi dal progetto, rimane San Paolo Imi alla quale viene chiesta una scelta di responsabilità sociale. Intanto anche la Cina sul campo energetico sta vivendo un momento di carenza che porta a uno sfruttamento delle risorse idriche e minerarie con conseguenti problemi ambientali e sociali.

20.05.2005 Le organizzazioni che da anni lavorano a fianco di alcune associazioni di donne afghane democratiche e laiche (RAWA, HAWCA, OPAWC) si appellano per la liberazione di Clementina Cantoni la cooperante italiana che collabora con Care International che è stata rapita la sera del 16 maggio nel centro di Kabul. "Il rapimento di Clementina dimostra che l’Afghanistan non è pacificato e che non ci sono i presupposti perché alcun processo di democratizzazione si realizzi" precisa l'appello. "In vista delle prossime elezioni le donne delle ONG afghane hanno firmato e sottoposto a Karzai un appello affinché mantenga le promesse fatte riguardo alle garanzie minime di sicurezza per le donne afghane; le donne vedono nel burqa ancora una protezione, le bambine hanno paura ad andare a scuola, soprattutto fuori Kabul la situazione è enormemente instabile, nell’ultimo anno centinaia di donne, in particolare nelle province di Herat e di Farah si sono suicidate autoimmolandosi per disperazione".

19.05.2005 A 32-year-old Italian aid worker who has lived and worked in Afghanistan for more than three years was abducted by armed gunman in Kabul Monday evening. This comes just two weeks after the bodies of three women were found in the north of the country with a note saying "this is retribution for those women who are working in NGOs and those who are involved in whoredom."

18.05.2005 Terre des hommes (Tdh) esprime massima solidarietà a Clementina Cantoni, operatrice umanitaria dell’organizzazione Care International rapita a Kabul nella serata del 16 maggio 2005 e lancia un appello per il suo rilascio immediato. ”Il rapimento dell’operatrice umanitaria è un atto gravissimo contro ogni organizzazione che si impegna per il rispetto dei Diritti Umani fondamentali in Afghanistan e nel resto del mondo -dichiara Raffaele K. Salinari, presidente di Tdh - Le nostre Ong sono spesso testimoni scomodi per coloro i quali vorrebbero negare le continue violazioni dei diritti umani nel Paese”. Tdh ricorda che i cooperanti umanitari non possono essere considerati merce di scambio e denuncia il clima di insicurezza in cui sono costretti ad operare i rappresentanti delle ONG in Afghanistan.

17.05.2005 Un gruppo di criminali comuni ha rivendicato il rapimento a Kabul della cooperante italiana Clementina Cantoni chiedendo alle autorità afghane la liberazione dei suoi due capi e di altri loro uomini come contropartita per la liberazione della volontaria. Il governo afghano non sembra però orientato ad accettare lo scambio, ma il ministro degli esteri, Gianfranco Fini assicura che per la liberazione della cooperante "il governo italiano d'intesa con quello afghano sta facendo di tutto". L'organizzazione umanitaria Care International ha chiesto la liberazione immediata della sua operatrice. Intanto, oggi un gruppo di duecento vedove afghane ha manifestato a Kabul per chiedere il rilascio di Clementina. La cooperante italiana stava dedicando alle vedove la maggior parte della sua attività umanitaria in Afghanistan, dove è responsabile dal settembre 2003 di un programma di distribuzione di generi alimentari e di sviluppo di microprogetti commerciali di cui beneficiano undicimila donne con i rispettivi figli.
