Radio journalists saved many lives in Ghazni city, Afghanistan, after news of a collapsing dam on March 29 was broadcast by the local radio station. A report from Radio Ghaznawiyaan allowed people to flee from Khwaja Omari and Ghazni City before the dam burst.

Families living on the banks of River Ghazni in Afghanistan are thanking a local radio station for saving their lives when the old Sultan Dam burst late last month. News of the collapse was broadcast during a morning show, allowing town residents time to evacuate; shops and homes were swept away but no lives were lost.

Molti afgani che hanno votato per Hamid Karzai, attuale presidente del paese, hanno creduto alla sua promessa elettorale di indebolire i signori della guerra. Sfortunatamente, Karzai ha scelto quale capo militare del suo staff Dostum, signore della guerra dell'Alleanza del Nord, mentre un altro di questi figuri, Ismail Khan, è diventato ministro dell'energia. E' in questo scenario che vive una giovane donna di nome Malalai Joya, deputata al parlamento afgano (Loya Jirga) eletta nella provincia di Farah. Malalai, dal 17 dicembre 2003, viene seguita 24 ore su 24 da guardie del corpo. Le sono stati danneggiati l'ufficio e l'abitazione, ed è stata violentemente e ripetutamente minacciata di morte, perchè ha esercitato il suo diritto di parola la' dove è stata eletta, stigmatizzando la presenza nel parlamento dei signori della guerra. Ecco cosa è accaduto il 17 dicembre 2003, durante quella seduta della Loya Jirga, a Kabul, Afghanistan.

President Karzai of Afghanistan has been complaining that too much aid is channelled through NGOs rather than his government. One test for his views may be the issue of opium production in which all parties (Afghan and US governments as well as NGOs) have strong views. This report says that at present there is some decline in poppy cultivation.
