Iranin Punaisen Puolikuun avustusryhmät auttavat varhain tiistaiaamuna tapahtuneen maanjäristyksen uhreja Kaakkois-Iranissa Kermanin maakunnassa. Järjestö on toimittanut alueelle telttoja, huopia ja elintarvikkeita helikoptereilla ja kolmella lentokoneella. Ylii 500 ihmisen arvioidaan kuolleen maanjäristyksessä.

Viimeisimmissä tarkastuksissa Iranista ei ole löydetty todisteita ydinaseiden kehittelystä, sanoi Kansainvälisen atomienergiakomission pääsihteeri Mohamed ElBaradei haastattelussa hiljattain. Hän suositteli, että Yhdysvallat liittyisi Iso-Britannian, Saksan ja Ranskan Iranin kanssa käymiin neuvotteluihin, joissa pyritään löytämään diplomaattinen ratkaisu kiistaan maan ydinaseohjelmasta.

As European leaders seek to cool the passions of George Bush on Iran, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, says that inspections in Iran have produced no recent evidence of development of nuclear weapons. He recommends that the US should join in the European strategy of diplomatic engagement.

Kolme vuotta Taleban-hallinnon kaatumisen jälkeen afganistanilaislapset ovat alkaneet palata kouluihin, talous kasvaa rivakasti ja naisten asema on parantunut. Kaikkien aikojen ensimmäinen Inhimillisen kehityksen raportti Afganistanista varoittaa kuitenkin, että vakava köyhyys, epätasa-arvo ja epävakaus saattavat suistaa maan takaisin kaaokseen.

Poikkeuksellisen ankara talvi koettelee Afganistanin lapsia. Erityisen hankala tilanne on vuoristossa ja maan koillisosissa. Tähän mennessä yli sadan lapsen on raportoitu menehtyneen kylmyyteen. Unicef on aloittanut maassa lasten tuhkarokko- ja hinkuyskärokotukset ja ryhtynyt toimittamaan lämpimiä vaatteita ja huopia pahimmin kärsiville alueille.

More than one month after the tsunamis hit Southeast Asia, a businessman in Wolfville, N.S. is anxiously waiting for more news from the people who helped him build his company. Jeff Moore, one of the founders of the Just Us! Coffee Roasters Co-op, says 90 per cent of the tea they carry is grown and packaged near the disaster region in Sri Lanka. They also purchase 10 per cent of their coffee beans from Indonesia's Aceh province. Economies must be re-built in Asia but this time ethics should be part of the brew.

USA:n kampanja Afganistanin vilkkaan heroiinikaupan kitkemiseksi voi viedä presidentti Hamid Karzain hallitukselta kansanjoukkojen tuen, kehitys- ja ihmisoikeusjärjestöt varoittavat. Unikkopeltojen äkkinäinen hävittäminen saattaa myös heikentää talebanien vallan kukistuttua alkanutta kehitystä, sanotaan järjestöjen kirjeessä USA:n uudelle ulkoministerille Condoleezza Ricelle.

Internews, with its partner, Future Generation, opened a radio station in the Ghazni province in Afghanistan. Four staff and seven volunteers produce five programs, including Nama ha wa Ahangha Shuma (“Your Letters and Your Songs”), a program designed to facilitate dialogue within the community.
