SAN FRANCISCO, Sep 22 (OneWorld) - The number of people making asylum claims in the United States, Japan, Australia, and Europe continues to decline, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) reported this week, but that doesn't mean fewer people are fleeing their homes as refugees.

Siamo stati a Beirut in missione di pace per vedere la guerra dal basso, con gli occhi di chi la subisce, come abbiamo sempre fatto in passato, in Iraq, in Turchia, a Belgrado, ancora in Iraq. Abbiamo visto la distruzione delle vite e del futuro cui giorno dopo giorno la popolazione del Libano era sottoposta, abbiamo ascoltato più e più volte la richiesta di cessate il fuoco immediato, abbiamo anche ascoltato le aspettative che l'Italia facesse la sua parte da protagonista. Il cessate il fuoco non è la pace, ma è la condizione affinché alla pace si possa almeno aspirare, perché sino a che cadono bombe e partono missili non vi è speranza e, giorno dopo giorno, si muore. Il cessate il fuoco è arrivato, tardivo, reticente, ambiguo e fragile, ma è arrivato. Subito i Libanesi sono ritornati nei propri luoghi ed hanno cominciato a ricostruire. Ora è decisivo che le armi continuino a tacere. Molte altre cose sono necessarie per la pace, ma la prima è che tacciano le armi. - di Un Ponte per
