25.01.2007 Torrential rains are lashing Angola, Mozambique and Zambia, killing scores of people, leaving thousands homeless and causing severe crop damage. In the Angolan capital, Luanda, floodwaters are still rising and the death toll has exceeded 75 people, with around 50 others reported missing. About 1,200 families have been displaced and aid workers fear that if the rains continue a wider humanitarian crisis could be provoked.

Silti on epävarmaa, onnistuuko maa puolittamaan köyhien ja nälkäisten määrän vuoteen 2015 mennessä, kuten YK:ssa asetettu tavoite edellyttäisi. Eteläisessä Afrikassa sijaitsevan 1,8 miljoonan asukkaan Botswanan talous on kasvanut vuosittain keskimäärin yli seitsemän prosenttia vuodesta 1986.

18.01.2007 Botswanan san-kansan jäsenet eli bushmannit aloittivat viikonloppuna paluun kansalle perinteisesti kuuluneille maille Botswanan sisämaahan Kalaharin suojelualueelle. Tämän he tekivät siitä huolimatta, että läsnä oli paljon poliiseja, jotka yrittivät taivutella heitä pysymään alueilla, joille heidät oli Kalaharista aikaisemmin siirretty.
