Torrential rains are lashing Angola, Mozambique and Zambia, killing scores of people, leaving thousands homeless and causing severe crop damage. In the Angolan capital, Luanda, floodwaters are still rising and the death toll has exceeded 75 people, with around 50 others reported missing. About 1,200 families have been displaced and aid workers fear that if the rains continue a wider humanitarian crisis could be provoked.

Botswana on nauttinut reippaasta talouskasvusta 20 viime vuotta. Silti on epävarmaa, onnistuuko maa puolittamaan köyhien ja nälkäisten määrän vuoteen 2015 mennessä, kuten YK:ssa asetettu tavoite edellyttäisi. Eteläisessä Afrikassa sijaitsevan 1,8 miljoonan asukkaan Botswanan talous on kasvanut vuosittain keskimäärin yli seitsemän prosenttia vuodesta 1986.

Botswanan san-kansan jäsenet eli bushmannit aloittivat viikonloppuna paluun kansalle perinteisesti kuuluneille maille Botswanan sisämaahan Kalaharin suojelualueelle.

Namibialaiset matkanjärjestäjät ottivat tiistaina tuntumaa suomalaiseen matkailuun Porvoossa.

Afrikan historian laajin tutkimus sosiaalisesta liikkuvuudesta alkaa tänä vuonna. Valtio on myöntänyt sille kolmen miljoonan euron rahoituksen.
