Botswana on saavuttanut kymmenessä vuodessa tavoitteensa taata jokaiselle lapselle mahdollisuus kymmenvuotiseen peruskoulutukseen. Eteläisessä Afrikassa sijaitseva Botswana on varannut koulutukseen runsaasti varoja aina maan itsenäistymisestä 1965 lähtien. Koulutuksen ja timanttiteollisuuden ansiosta Botswanaa pidetän tällä hetkellä yhtenä eteläisen Afrikan vakaimmista talouksista.

Tesco will announce its annual profits today, results which will doubtless satisfy the shareholders. ActionAid reports that these margins are coming not from those of us at the top of the chain in the supermarkets but from casual women labourers on South African farms whose conditions are being squeezed below poverty thresholds.

In the aftermath of the controversial Zimbabwean elections held on 31 March 2005, questions abound about what constitutes a free and fair election. The South African government delegation said the election was free but not necessarily fair. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) took a similar view with media and other observers saying the election was neither free nor fair. The African Union has reserved judgment pending further investigation into allegations raised by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) of problems with voters’ rolls and more wide-scale vote rigging. It is worth reflecting not only on what constitutes a free and fair election but on what constitutes democracy more broadly.

After ruling Zimbabwe for 25 years with an increasingly iron fist, President Robert Mugabe's grip on power just got a whole lot tighter. Last week's elections - endorsed by regional leaders but which critics say was manipulated - emasculated the strongest opposition party in Southern Africa and gave Mr. Mugabe unchecked control over this nation of 12 million.

Robert Mugaben johtama ZANU-PF –puolue on julistanut voittaneensa Zimbabwen vaaleissa kahden kolmanneksen enemmistön hallitukseen. Viime torstaisten vaalien tulos antaa Mugaben puolueelle mahdollisuuden lisätä valtaansa perustuslakia muuttamalla. Vaikka oppositio ja monet zimbabwelaiset syyttävät Mugabea vilpistä, ei kansannoususta näy merkkejä.
