Unless rebel attacks against UN and other relief operations in part of Sudan's Darfur region stop immediately, the world body will suspend all assistance to 450,000 vulnerable people in the area, a top UN official said.

Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno has promised that 200,000 refugees from Sudan's Darfur region will not be forcibly returned, the head of the UN refugee agency said after a telephone conversation on Sunday.

A Norwegian aid organization that runs the largest camp for internally displaced persons in conflict ridden Darfur was asked to leave the country by Sudanese authorities. Restrictions against NGOs have been increasing the last couple of months and have raised concerns about the millions who rely on humanitarian relief.
