WASHINGTON, D.C., Jul 25 (OneWorld) - Congress has done little to protect lives in Darfur in the year since it declared, unanimously, that mass killings there amounted to genocide, a leading U.S.-based advocacy group has charged amid an upsurge in violence in the western Sudanese region.

The leadership asserted by the U.S. Congress one year ago, when it unanimously declared that genocide was taking place in the western Sudanese region of Darfur, has now dissipated, says Africa Action, faulting the legislators for failing to exert pressure on the Bush administration to provide protection for Darfur's civilians, where threats of sanctions and divestment have proved insufficient.

Faced with a funding shortfall for Sudan’s strife-torn Darfur region, the U.N.'s Food and Agricultural Organization has appealed for $8 million to provide vulnerable families with agricultural supplies and seeds so they can produce their own food, a more effective strategy than providing food aid because it gives people an incentive to stay on the land and provides food for several months.

CNN, Fox News, NBC/MSNBC, ABC, and CBS devoted more than 8,000 segments in June to the "runaway bride," the Michael Jackson trial, and actor Tom Cruise, reports the "Be A Witness" campaign; the ongoing genocide in Darfur was alotted 126 segments. The campaign is calling on Americans to send a message to these networks to "give the Darfur genocide the coverage it so clearly deserves."
