Bushia, jotta Yhdysvallat suostuisi Darfurin alueen sotarikosten käsittelyyn Kansainvälisessä rikostuomioistuimessa. Yhdysvallat ei edelleenkään ole halukas toimimaan yhteistyössä Haagin tuomioistuimen kanssa, vaan ehdottaa erillisen, afrikkalaisen tuomioistuimen perustamista Darfurin tapahtumien käsittelemiseksi.

Bush is under growing pressure from human rights groups and U.S. allies to refer what his administration has called "genocide" in Darfur, Sudan, to the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague.

10.02.2005 L'accordo di pace tra il governo del Sudan e i ribelli del sud (Spla) firmato a Nairobi ai primi di gennaio segna la fine di un conflitto durato 21 anni. Ma "il fatto che la pace sia stata firmata nel sud mentre è in atto una tremenda crisi nel Darfur, getta un'ombra inquietante sull'intero processo. Può un governo che sta conducendo un genocidio in una regione essere un partner credibile per una pace nazionale duratura?" - nota l'editoriale di Febbraio del mensile Nigrizia. "Se, da un lato, riconosciamo che ciò che è avvenuto nello stadio di Nairobi è davvero un evento storico, dall'altro, avvertiamo che siamo di fronte a una firma condizionata da troppi "se" e "ma". Chiediamo all'Unione europea di istituire una commissione permanente - composta di eurodeputati e membri di organizzazioni non governative europee - con il compito di vigilare sul rispetto delle varie clausole dell'Accordo globale. Ma anche sugli aiuti, affinché arrivino davvero alle popolazioni bisognose e non alle solite oligarchie nazionali o regionali.

Pakolaiset palaavat sodan vaurioittamaan maahan, jossa ei ole tarpeeksi kouluja tai sairaaloita ja josta puuttuvat kokonaan postit, pankit ja usein myös kunnon tiet.

08.02.2005 The CRIS Campaign released a statement to the Social Assemblies of the World Social Forum putting the spotlight on communication rights violations in Tunisia, the host country for the 2005 World Summit on the Information society. The statement also lays out CRIS' support for proposals at UNESCO for a strong international convention to promote and defend cultural diversity - a step which could provide a legislative defence for nations contesting damaging international free trade agreements.

07.02.2005 Otre 70 mila sgozzati, duemila villaggi devastati, un milione e mezzo tra profughi e sfollati non sono bastati alla Commissione d’inchiesta dell’Onu per definire come «genocidio» la strage che sta avvenendo nel Darfur, Sudan occidentale. La Commissione riconosce che sono stati perpetrati «atti di genocidio», i cui responsabili sono individuati anche in alti funzionari governativi, ma il governo del Sudan «non ha perseguito una politica di genocidio nel Darfur». La Commissione ha fatto due raccomandazioni importanti: incaricare la Corte penale internazionale (Cpi) di perseguire i presunti colpevoli e creare una commissione per il risarcimento delle vittime. Che non piacciono, per motivi diversi, agli Stati Uniti, Russia e Cina.

07.02.2005 Sul controllo dell’informazione imposto dal sistema dominante si è tenuto un dibattito a Porto Alegre a cui hanno partecipato tra gli altri Giulietto Chiesa e Ignacio Ramonet. Gli interventi della maggior parte dei partecipanti concordava sul fatto che la privatizzazione dei mezzi di comunicazione non garantisce il pluralismo dell’informazione. Su questo tema si è discusso anche all’interno della campagna Cris che si sta mobilitando verso il vertice Onu (Wsis) che si terrà a novembre in Tunisia. Da molte organizzazioni tunisine arrivano denuncie di limitazione della libertà di espressione e per questo rimangono contrarie a mantenere la sede del vertice in Tunisia che comunque sarà un occasione per sollevare il problema a livello internazionale.

President Bush is taking heat for failing to mention any key issue of U.S. Africa policy, including the ongoing atrocities in Darfur, Sudan.

L'Associazione ONG Italiane sostiene con forza la posizione dell'UE che chiede che i crimini contro l'umanità commessi in Darfur siano giudicati dalla Corte Penale Internazionale. "L'Onu ripete il suo fallimento in Bosnia e in Rwanda dove è rimasta in disparte a guardare senza fare assolutamente nulla mentre venivano commessi i crimini più atroci" - denuncia l'Associazione dei popoli minacciati.

02.02.2005 The conflict in Sudan's Darfur region has taken centre-stage at the African Union summit where President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria said AU-sponsored peace talks between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebels would resume in mid-February.

02.02.2005 The Bush administration has called for a new ad hoc tribunal to try cases of atrocities in Darfur, which would cost much more and take much longer to begin than would hearings before the already functioning International Criminal Court. "The Bush administration seems willing to sacrifice Darfur's victims to its ideological campaign against the Court," charged one rights advocate.
