Dopo mesi di crescente tensione interna, nei giorni scorsi i ribelli del Fronte unito per il cambiamento (Fuc) sono arrivati alle porte di N’djamena, la capitale del Ciad, dopo aver percorso in pochi giorni i circa ottocento chilometri tra il confine con il Sudan e la capitale. Idriss Deby, al potere dal 1990 e principale candidato alle elezioni indette per il 3 maggio, è ancora al potere, ma tutto lascia indicare che il suo “regno” potrebbe avere i giorni contati. Sulla ricostruzione dei fatti le versioni sono discordanti. Ciò che è certo è che all’alba di giovedì la capitale è stata svegliata dai colpi di arma da fuoco, sparati tra esercito e ribelli nella periferia nordorientale della città. Non sembra che i ribelli siano riusciti a entrare fin nel cuore di N’djamena, dove la situazione è rimasta relativamente tranquilla. Già nel pomeriggio, comunque, la calma era tornata in città. Deby, parlando alla radio, ha detto che l’attacco dei ribelli è stato respinto con decisione e l’esercito nazionale ha vinto la battaglia. La “cavalcata” dei ribelli attraverso il paese e la conquista di città e basi militari sulla via per N’djamena dicono invece che il regime è ormai molto debole. E che i ribelli hanno deciso di sferrare l’attacco finale al potere di Deby per cercare di “eliminarlo” prima delle elezioni.

14.04.2006 Un'epidemia di colera si estende rapidamente nella capitale dell’Angola, Luanda e in altre zone del paese riporta Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) che chiede urgentemente alle autorità angolane di dichiarare ufficialmente l’epidemia e prendere immediatamente tutte le misure necessarie per controllarla. Il numero totale di casi confermati di colera è fermo a 8.930, ma questa settimana il numero è arrivato a quasi 500 nuovi casi al giorno. "Siamo preoccupati per il fatto che l’epidemia sia ormai fuori controllo" - afferma Richard Veerman, capo missione per MSF in Angola. Intanto circa 700 persone sono morte a causa di meningite in Burkina Faso e in Niger dall'inizio dell'anno mentre sono 7mila i casi recensiti dalle Nazioni Unite. E dopo due anni di lavori sta per aprire i battenti il nuovo centro sanitario di Kovè (Togo), per le vaccinazioni contro il tetano, la meningite, la poliomielite ed il colera realizzato con donazioni private e con il contributo dell'agenzia Ansa.
