A coalition of human rights groups from around the world has named activists from Zimbabwe, Iran, and the Democratic Republic of Congo finalists for this year's Martin Ennals award. All four activists are in immediate need of protection, the groups say.

With inflation nearing 600% and the average Zimbabwean family needing Zim $16.6 million a month to survive, the practical problems of hyperinflation have reached new heights as people are forced to carry plastic trash bags of cash to pay for basic necessities. The government, which blames unofficial sanctions, has responded to the crisis by introducing a new Zim $50,000 note.
