The US$1.1-billion dam project would require large-scale flooding and resettlement of thousands of poor farmers - and would be more costly and less reliable than other generating options to serve neighbouring Thailand.

29.01.2004 La Banca europea per gli investimenti (BEI) ha approvato nel tardo pomeriggio di ieri un finanziamento di 60 milioni di euro per il contestato progetto della miniera di rame di Sepon, in Laos, di proprietà della compagnia australiana Oxiana. La notizia è stata accolta con estremo sfavore da parte delle Ong internazionali, tra cui la Campagna per la riforma della Banca mondiale, che nel dicembre scorso erano riuscite a far rinviare la decisione e che oggi denunciano la mancanza di una valutazione di impatto ambientale.

Kaivos sijaitsee tärkeällä sademetsä- ja jokialueella ja siitä syntyvä jäte uhkaa tuhota paikallisen luonnon ja ihmisten elinkeinon. 03.10.2003 Ongoing conflict between military forces and minority groups, such as the Hmong, in isolated areas of Laos is resulting in the death of dozens of civilians, especially children, as the Laotian army has hemmed in communities preventing them from hunting and foraging for food, according to reports received by Amnesty International.
