L'Unhcr stima che 1,7 milioni di iracheni si trovino attualmente nella condizione di sfollati interni, mentre circa 2 milioni di persone sono fuggite nei paesi limitrofi. E sempre l'Unhcr comunica che numerosi cittadini iracheni stanno cercando rifugio fuori della regione geografica interessata arrivando anche in Europa e raccomanda ai governi che ai richiedenti asilo iracheni provenienti dal sud e dal centro del paese venga accordato lo status di rifugiato ai sensi della Convenzione sui Rifugiati del 1951.
