Rosine Mahinou, a mother of seven never thought she would send her girls to school. But that was five years ago. Today, Ms. Mahinou has enrolled all of her girls in school along with her boys. This sea change in her attitude is largely due to a programme promoting girls’ education called Education and Community, in her village in Benin.

Beninin demokratia on kehittynyt positiivisesti, mutta se kaipaa silti vahvistamista, sanoo YK:n kehitysohjelman UNDP:n apulaisasiantuntijana Cotonoussa työskentelevä Aleksi Hokkanen. Hokkanen on mukana ohjelmassa, jonka tavoitteena on demokraattisen hallinnon vahvistaminen. Käytännössä tämä merkitsee erityisesti parlamentin aseman tukemista.

Beninin demokratia on kehittynyt positiivisesti, mutta se kaipaa silti vahvistamista, sanoo YK:n kehitysohjelman UNDP:n apulaisasiantuntijana Cotonoussa työskentelevä Aleksi Hokkanen. Ongelmista huolimatta Beniniä on pidetty eräänlaisena afrikkalaisen demokratian mallimaana, sillä vaalit on järjestetty ajallaan ja tilanne on säilynyt rauhallisena, toisin kuin monissa muissa alueen maissa.
