10.11.2006 Suomen Lähetysseuran työ Taiwanissa alkoi vuonna 1956. Ensimmäiset työntekijät olivat kolme entistä Kiinan-lähetystyöntekijää. Lähetysseuran työntekijät olivat joutuneet poistumaan Kiinasta kommunistien noustua valtaan 1949. Suomen Lähetysseuran työntekijä Irma Nygren on asunut Taiwanissa 30 vuotta. Hän on nähnyt maan vaurastumisen ja kehittymisen.

16.08.2006 Taiwan oli verkkaisen elämänmenon sävyttämä riisipeltojen saari, kun ensimmäiset Suomen Lähetysseuran työntekijät saapuivat sinne 50 vuotta sitten. Nyt lähetystyöntekijät elävät kiirettä sykkivissä suurkaupungeissa. Jokin on silti säilynyt samana: taiwanilaisten rakkaus yhteisöllisyyteen.

15.12.2005 The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) board of directors today announced that Quanta Computer Inc. of Taiwan was chosen as the original design manufacturer (ODM) for the $100 laptop project. The decision was made after the board reviewed bids from several possible manufacturing companies.

16.05.2005 Taiwanilla tuore tutkimus vahvistaa yleisen käsityksen, jonka mukaan vuokratyötä tekevien työehdot ovat huonommat kuin vakituisessa työsuhteessa olevien. Yrityksiä se on houkutellut hyödyntämään yhä enemmän työvoimaa vuokraavien yhtiöiden palveluja. Vuokratyöläisen palkka voi olla kolmanneksen heikompi kuin vakituisen ja välityspalkkio voi nousta jopa 30 prosenttiin vuokratyöläisen palkasta.

26.03.2005 Circa 500 attivisti cinesi per la democrazia ed i diritti umani hanno inviato mercoledì scorso una lettera aperta all'Ue in cui, denunciando l'alto numero di abusi ai diritti umani tuttora commessi nella Repubblica popolare, chiedono all'Ue di mantenere l'embargo sulla vendita di armi alla Cina. Amnesty International ha segnalato intanto all'Ue nuovi arresti ai danni di attivisti che tentano di difendere i diritti in Cina. E oggi a Taiwan oltre 1 milione di persone sono scese nelle strade della capitale per protestare contro la legge anti-secessione approvata il 14 marzo scorso dall'Assemblea Nazionale del Popolo di Pechino.

15.03.2005 Kiinan kansankongressi on hyväksynyt kiistellyn lain, joka antaa laillisen perustan voimatoimille Taiwanin itsenäisyyden estämiseksi. Taiwanissa kansallisen tutkimuslaitoksen tekemän mielipidekyselyn mukaan 90 prosenttia taiwanilaisista vastustaa itsenäisyyskysymyksen ratkaisemista sotilaallisesti. Myös Yhdysvallat on ilmoittanut pitävänsä lakia valitettavana.

24.02.2005 In Finland, workers of the Taiwanese owned Foxconn have been in a legal strike since 16th February. By the action they defend their right to apply the plastic industry collective agreement, which guarantees workers higher pay than the agreement Foxconn suggests. If Foxconn could enforce its plan, it would create a precedent that would seriously hurt the rights of all wage and salary earners.

28.12.2004 Il Comitato permanente del Parlamento cinese ha approvato ieri il disegno di legge anti-secessione mirante a fronteggiare i piani indipendentisti di Taiwan e a tener unito il Paese in un eventuale conflitto contro l'isola. In risposta gli Stati Uniti hanno deciso, per la prima volta dal 1979, di inviare militari a Taiwan: gli Usa sono "preoccupati delle crescenti ambizioni militari di Pechino nella regione dell’Asia-Pacifico". Intanto Cina e Russia hanno deciso di avviare manovre militari congiunte sul terrirorio cinese a partire dal prossimo anno.

In risposta all'ordine dato dal presidente taiwanese al Kuomintang (il partito d'opposizione filo cinese) di cambiare il suo simbolo perché simile a quello della bandiera cinese, la Cina ha comunicato che se Taiwan "continua a premere per l'indipendenza, il conflitto armato sarà inevitabile".

Centre for Disease Control director Su Ih-jen is recommending hospitals take direct control of contracted-out work — such as laundry, cleaning and nursing aide services — to bolster Taiwan's infection control efforts.
