A network of former Burmese political prisoners who have fled the country are raising concerns that the upcoming visit of a UN envoy formerly barred from the country "will help to ease the international pressure on the regime and nothing more."

About 14,000 Burmese refugees have reached the United States this year. A refugee support group is helping many of them settle into their new lives and "become potent forces to help accelerate change in their home countries," says Ellen Beattie.

"Keeping quiet while monks and other peaceful protesters are murdered and jailed is not evidence of constructive engagement," said an international human rights monitor Tuesday, urging Chinese, Indian, Thai, and other companies to take a stand against the military crackdown in Burma.

The complete absence of Internet in Burma is making it very hard to send photos and video footage to the outside world, said a press freedom group Sunday, urging the international media to do everything in its power to break through the news blackout.
