Burma’s democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was arrested in May 2003 after the regime’s militia attacked her convoy and killed up to 100 of her supporters. She is still in detention. Burma’s military dictatorship extended Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention at the weekend, despite calls for her release from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The move was also an embarrassment for UN Under-Secretary Ibrahim Gambari, who campaigners said was "duped by the regime’s lies and propaganda" during his visit to the country last week.

UN Under-Secretary General Ibrahim Gambari was accused of falling for Burmese government spin yesterday as a pro-democracy group insisted: "This is not a new chapter or new page, as Gambari claims, it is the same old story."

BANGKOK, May 22 (IPS) - Going by the highly restrictive way Burma's military regime does business, it was a victory for international diplomacy. On the weekend, it looked as if the junta was taking a step back by permitting a senior United Nations official to meet incarcerated, pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Maailman suurin urheiluvälineyhtiö Amer Sports on lopettanut myyntiedustuksensa sotilasjuntan hallitsemassa Burmassa. Suomen ammattiliittojen Solidaarisuuskeskukselle antamansa ilmoituksen mukaan yhtiö ei ole toimittanut Burmaan tuotteitaan kesän 2003 jälkeen. Burma on maailman ainoana maana kansainvälisen työjärjestön ILO:n boikotissa. Myös Amer joutui vuonna 2001 ILO:n suositusta rikkovien yritysten mustalle listalle, jota kansainväliset ammattijärjestöt ylläpitävät.

DHL - "global market leader in international express, overland transport and air freight" - is to end its joint venture with Burma’s military dictatorship, The Burma Campaign has been told by DHL’s parent company, Deutsche Post.
