Tosin vastustajiakin löytyy. Aseilla aiheutetut kuolemat yli kaksinkertaistuivat Brasiliassa vuosina 1992 - 2003, mikä on saanut hallituksen kiristämään asevalvontaa.

16.09.2005 In concomitanza con l'Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite è stato presentato il rapporto Social Watch 2005, lo studio indipendente sullo sviluppo sociale più autorevole a livello internazionale. L'edizione 2005 chiede un cambio radicale di direzione nel modo in cui l'Italia utilizza le sue risorse. Ad esempio il rapporto mette in risalto la necessità di riconvertire la sua industria militare e offrire maggiori aiuti ai paesi che stanno affrontando le situazioni più critiche, perchè anch'esse possano avere qualche possibilità di raggiungere gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio (Mdg). Il rapporto misura lo sviluppo sociale utilizzando un nuovo indice che valuta settori come salute ed educazione. L’Italia si trova nel livello critico e assieme alla gran maggioranza delle nazioni Europee e una manciata da altre regioni, tra cui l'Australia, il Chile, la Nuova Zelanda e gli Stati Uniti.

07.09.2005 A quanto ammontano le spese militari italiane? Ed è vero che il Governo Berlusconi le ha aumentate? In che rapporto stanno le spese militari con le spese sociali? Alla vigilia dell'incontro tra la Tavola della Pace e il leader dell'Unione Romano Prodi, in programma per domani giovedì 8 settembre durante la Sesta Assemblea dell'Onu dei Popoli, ecco un'analisi delle spese militari italiane e alcune domande che vorremo rivolgere non solo a Prodi. Secondo i bilanci del Ministro della difesa, infatti, le spese militari non supererebbero l'1,5% del Pil, ma secondo altre fonti autorevoli come il Sipri e la Nato, la cifra si aggira sempre attorno al 2% del Pil. Nel 2004 la spesa militare italiana ha toccato i 484 dollari pro-capite, superando ampiamente quella di Giappone (332 dollari) e Germania (411 dollari). L'Italia dedica pero' alle voci dello stato sociale solo il 2,7% del proprio Pil (poco più delle spese militari), mentre la media europea per spese sociali è assestata sul 6,9%.
