Recent reports show the Bush administration continues to press for the militarization of space, claiming it would protect U.S. interests and ensure U.S. military dominance. Critics, however, dismiss the plan as not cost effective and unlikely to achieve its goals. Somalia's Transitional Federal Government, which has been based in Nairobi, Kenya since it was formed eight months ago, finally began relocating to Mogadishu this week. Despite the failure of previous promises to return to its own capital, analysts are optimistic that this relocation will be carried out, citing the interim president's lead as a positive sign.

On June 9, The International Federation of Journalists expressed its shock and concern over the attempted murder of Kosovo journalist, Bardhyl Ajeti, shot on Friday 3 June. Ajeti has been flown to a hospital in Milan where he remains in a critical but stable condition with a bullet resting in his head and another in his body.

Post 9/11, the global war on terrorism and heightened threat perception levels have meant that global defence spending in 2003 touched a record high, even in cash-strapped developing countries. A new report ‘Military spending and development’, published by the British global research reporting agency id21, finds that military spending reached over US$1 trillion (1,000 billion) -- a level last seen during the Cold War.

Da ieri pomeriggio, Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) non ha più notizie di due suoi operatori che si stavano recando, a bordo di una jeep chiaramente identificabile dai logo dell'organizzazione, verso il campo sfollati di Jina (regione di Djugu), situato a circa 35 km a Nord di Bunia, capitale dell'Ituri. Alcuni testimoni riferiscono di averli visti mentre venivano fermati e condotti a piedi, da alcuni uomini armati non identificati, verso un luogo sconosciuto. MSF condanna questo gesto incomprensibile e esige la liberazione incondizionata e immediata.
