14.05.2008 Don Gabriele Pipinato responsabile della comunità di St. Martin nella diocesi di Nyahururu in Kenya, riprende il dialogo con i lettori di Unimondo dopo i tragici fatti del gennaio scorso. "Non si vive più nella paura" - scrive don Gabriele. "Certamente non mancano motivi di preoccupazione per un governo di coalizione che vive nel sospetto reciproco e per i rifugiati che stanno affrontando il dramma di una vita precaria, tuttavia non si vive nella paura. Non c’è più l’incertezza del futuro, l’angoscia che gli eventi possano scivolare in un genocidio, il timore di parlare di quello che è successo. La gente dorme la notte e le minaccie di vendetta si sono allontanate. Non viviamo più nella paura, ma l’ingiustizia e la violenza hanno lasciato ferite profonde e ci vorranno lunghi anni per guarirle".

10.05.2008 Pubblichiamo l’intervista rilasciata a Christophe Chaland della rivista francese ‘Panorama’ a Jean Vanier, fondatore delle Comunità dell'Arca che ringraziamo per la traduzione e concessione del testo. “Oggi nel mondo ci sono 134 comunità (e una ventina sono in fase di costituzione - ndr). E ci sono anche 1500 comunità “Fede e Luce”. Ho proprio l’impressione – afferma Jean Vanier - anzi per me è evidente, che Dio si è servito di me. Come anche di tanti altri. Non ho mai avuto un piano. Ho sempre fatto fatica, ancora oggi, a considerarmi fondatore. Conosco persone che sono state veri e propri fondatori, in quanto sapevano bene ciò che volevano. Io, assolutamente, no! Ho scoperto le ingiustizie che venivano fatte sulle persone con handicap e ho accolto due di esse, perché il Padre Thomas me li aveva fatti incontrare. Pensavo che avrei passato il resto della mia vita con due o tre persone ma poi ho scoperto che ero “seduto su una miniera d’oro”: la spiritualità della trasformazione grazie ai poveri, a contatto con i poveri, una nuova visione della Chiesa: la Chiesa dei poveri. Ho scoperto qualcosa di inatteso”.

Many among approximately 470 million disabled persons of employable age often face disproportionate levels of poverty and unemployment.

03.12.2007 To mark the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3, a two-day event, ‘Abilities Mela’, was held in Indian capital New Delhi to showcase the skills and talents of people suffering from variety of disabilities. Organised by National Trust and supported by major corporate groups, the event also had a job fair to provide them with opportunities for work.

Exclusion of the disabled results in a loss of some US $1.94 trillion to global GDP.

28.11.2007 Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation has extended a grant of 100 million dollars for polio eradication worldwide. The grant will target Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan, the last four countries in the world where fresh cases of polio still keep surfacing.

22.11.2007 Released on November 20, a World Bank study on people with disabilities in India finds low levels of literacy and employment among approximately 90 million of its population. Majority of Indians see disability as a ‘curse of God’ and turn a blind eye to their problems.

21.11.2007 No scholarships or unemployment allowance to the disabled, no financial assistance to widows, no juvenile shelter homes, no primary school for the deaf, no home for mentally retarded, no leprosy complex and no disbursement of funds to old-age homes. Despite availability of funds, the social welfare schemes of the Delhi government are in a shambles.
