A coalition of Indian activists, the Rashtriya Jal Biradari, has launched a nationwide Jal Satyagraha (struggle for water) for water conservation. At its recent meeting at New Delhi, experts, government representatives and CSOs spoke on ways to restore the lost glory of the city’s river Yamuna and resolve the present water crisis.

Indian NGO, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in collaboration with Development and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage (DRONAH) is organising a public meeting on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Gurgaon, near Delhi in India at 6:45 pm. The event will feature the release of CSE's publication, 'Sewage Canal: How to Clean the Yamuna' by Shri Bhure Lal, Chairman, Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) followed by a screening of CSE's 32-minute film on the Yamuna.

Penyebab banjir di Jakarta lebih besar karena run off (air larian) yang tidak terkendali. Selama ini, perubahan fungsi lahan terjadi di hilir. Perubahan lahan dari hutan menjadi padang rumput menambah run off antara 10 sampai 15%. Sedangkan mengubah hutan menjadi kota menambah run off sampai 90%.

The UN has declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation. In its first preparatory meeting at New York on 7 May, participants from NGOs, citizen groups, academics and private sector and hosts UNICEF, UNDESA and UNSGAB agreed on the need for an urgent action plan to help accelerate progress and public awareness on sanitation worldwide.

La crisi idrica che nuovamente colpisce il nostro Paese costituisce, a giudizio del Comitato Italiano per il Contratto Mondiale sull’Acqua, l’occasione per attuare in Italia una nuova politica di governo delle risorse idriche. "Il piano di risparmio idrico elaborato dal Governo resta assai debole sul piano degli strumenti e dei poteri di controllo e di sanzione" - denuncia il Comitato che chiede al Governo di emanare con carattere di urgenza un decreto legge difenda immediatamente l’acqua come "bene comune" e non "merce" e conseguentemente sospenda "tutte le procedure in corso per la sua privatizzazione".

A two-day round-table talk on waste management in health care will start on 3rd May at Bangalore, India. Government representatives, NGOs and international health experts plan to chalk out guidelines for hospital hygiene and safety of healthcare workers. The conference is organised by German Technical Cooperation (GTC) and Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests, in alliance with HCWM Cell of M.S Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore.
