Thousands of Ranchis held a mass rally at Port Blair to demand their tribal identity and rights. Currently 13% of the Andaman and Nicobar population, these tribes were first brought to the islands as labourers to clear jungles for settlements.

For the Tharu, a group of people native to southwestern Nepal, freedom from years of bonded labor initially meant being kicked out into a completely foreign society, forming small communities on marginal land, and falling deeper into poverty. Now, youth programs that promote education are empowering the Tharu's younger generations to repair the injustices and indignities of the preceding generations.

The ILO and the Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation have come together to help develop new kinds of insurance for low-income people in impoverished countries across the world. Thirty-four million US dollars given by the Gates Foundation will create the Microinsurance Innovation Facility that will provide grants and technical assistance to organisations working with the poor.

A three-day conference on poverty eradication began in Indian capital New Delhi. Organised by Development Alternatives and Price Waterhouse Coopers, the conference aims to highlight the achievements of seven-year long largest civil society initiative, known as Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) programme, to eradicate poverty.
